A Spaced Repetition Math Error Log Template
An error log works when it helps you retrieve the right idea later. Capture enough detail to understand the mistake, then schedule a fresh attempt instead of rereading the answer immediately before a test.
Copy this template for each missed or guessed problem
- 1. Date and source
- Contest, worksheet, or book and the date
- 2. Topic or skill
- For example: cyclic quadrilaterals or modular arithmetic
- 3. What I tried
- Write your actual first approach, including guesses
- 4. Where my reasoning went wrong
- Name the specific gap: concept, setup, calculation, or reading
- 5. The key idea or corrected solution
- Explain the method in your own words
- 6. A cue to recognize this pattern next time
- A short trigger such as ‘equal angles subtend the same chord’
- 7. Next review date
- Try again in 2 days, then about a week later
A simple review schedule
After correcting a problem, close the solution and reproduce the reasoning once. Reattempt it after roughly two days, then again after a week. If you solve it cleanly without a hint, widen the gap; if you get stuck, review the missing idea and schedule another short interval.
Keep the log useful by grouping entries by skill. When several mistakes share the same cause, study that underlying concept rather than collecting more nearly identical examples. Guesses belong in the log too: a lucky correct answer can hide an unstable method.
Avoid turning the log into a transcript of every solution. One clear explanation and one recognition cue are easier to review than a full page of copied work.
