AMC 10 strategy

How to Prepare for AMC 10

The strongest AMC 10 preparation combines broad topic fluency, deliberate timed practice, and careful review. The goal is not to memorize tricks; it is to recognize useful structures and choose a sound approach under time pressure.

1. Take a diagnostic before choosing what to study

Use one past contest under timed conditions. For every question, note whether you solved it, guessed, or left it blank. Sort errors across algebra, geometry, number theory, and combinatorics. This separates content gaps from pacing or accuracy problems.

2. Study topics in short, mixed cycles

Spend focused sessions on a weak topic, then mix it with previously studied material. For geometry, practice diagrams, similar triangles, circles, and area relationships. For algebra, work on equations, inequalities, sequences, and expressions. Number theory benefits from divisibility, remainders, and systematic casework; counting requires precise definitions and organized cases.

3. Train decisions as well as solutions

A 25-question AMC 10 lasts 75 minutes. Practice moving on when a path stalls, returning to marked problems, and checking arithmetic when time remains. A useful checkpoint is to ask: can I state the next step clearly? If not, try a simpler case or save the problem for a second pass.

4. Keep an error log you actually revisit

Write the topic, your original approach, the key idea you missed, and one reminder for a future attempt. Re-solve the problem from a blank page after a few days, then revisit it later. See our math error log template for a repeatable format.

5. Build a sustainable weekly routine

For example: two topic sessions, one mixed problem set, one timed section, and one review session. Adjust the workload to your school schedule and leave time to redo missed problems. In the final weeks, prioritize full-length simulations and sleep over last-minute topic cramming.
