Power of a Point (Medium)

AMC 10/12 mid (≈Q9–16) — multi-step.

Power of a Point: core idea

Tangent-secant.

Example problem: hint and answer

Circle radius 1313, point 55 from center. Chord through that point — find chord length.

Hint: Half-chord =132−52=12=\sqrt{13^2-5^2}=12. Answer: 24.

Practice (9 problems — type your answers)

  • 1. Power of point PP w.r.t. circle radius 55: OP=13OP=13. Find power.

  • 2. Tangent length 1010, whole secant 2525. External secant segment?

  • 3. Two circles intersect at A,BA,B. Line through PP on ABAB meets circles at C,DC,D with PC=4PC=4, PD=9PD=9. If PA=3PA=3, find PBPB.

  • 4. Point (3,4)(3,4) w.r.t. circle x2+y2=25x^2+y^2=25. Find power of the point.

  • 5. External secant: external part 55, whole secant 2020. Tangent length?

  • 6. Radius 1010, chord length 1212. Distance from center to chord?

  • 7. Intersecting chords: 88 and 33; other chord 44 and xx.

  • 8. Tangent length 1212, external secant segment 44. Find whole secant length.

  • 9. Power of (4,3)(4,3) w.r.t. x2+y2=9x^2+y^2=9?
